How Many Points for Speeding?

A question a lot of people want answered is, if they are caught by a speed camera – how many points do you get for speeding?

The answer will depend on a number of factors.

For the vast majority of driving offences, the punishment for speeding will consist of a fine and penalty points on your driving licence. Although the number of points you get is fixed for many offences, with speeding, there is specified range of penalties, with the Court having some discretion as to the number of points to impose and the fine to impose, taking into account the circumstances of both the offence and the speeding offender.

What happens after I have been flashed by a speed camera?

If you are caught speeding you will get an NIP (notice of intended prosecution) and you will also be sent a Section 172 notice within 14 days of the alleged speeding offence. This is a form asking you to confirm who was driving the vehicle at the time of the claimed infringement. You must comply with the request to identify the driver of the car involved with the alleged speeding offence within 28 days. Failure to do so could see you liable to having the licence endorsed with six penalty points and a £1,000 fine.

The minimum amount of a speeding fine in the UK is £100. This is usually slightly more than the cost of a speed awareness course. You can also have a minimum of three penalty points added to your licence, and if you receive 12 penalty points or more within a three-year period, you could be disqualified from driving. For new drivers, bear in mind that could have your licence revoked if you receive more than six penalty points within two years.
